Aug 3rd message

Dear Wahoos,
Congratulations to all of our coaches, swimmers and divers for another great summer season. At last week's JRAC Swim Championships, the Wahoos placed 12th among 19 teams and took home the 2010 Red Division Sportsmanship Award! Our Champs represented our team well, swimming their best and showing great sportsmanship as usual. Many gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as ribbons for places 4-8, were won in fierce competitions. Danny Welborn broke his own WRA records setting new times in the 100 IM (1:06.62), 100 Free (59.32) and 50 Back (30.98). I have attached all Champs Swim and Dive Winners Places 1-8. For complete individual and team results go to www.jracsummerswim.org. Trophies and medals that were not picked up at the banquet or champs are at the snack bar.

Good luck to our seniors as they head off to college this August:
Aaron Fisk to University of Miami
Eliza Ertel to George Mason University
Katie Hood to Old Dominion University
Emily Walter to Virginia Tech

Best wishes to you and your family for a fun-filled (or maybe just lazy!) August.

Sincerely,
Cathy Welborn

July 28th email

Good Morning Wahoo Champs,
We've got two big, exciting days ahead of us. Get lots of rest today, drink plenty of water and try to stay out of the sun. Tomorrow, make sure you allow plenty of time to get to Godwin High School, park, load your gear onto the busses and travel to NOVA. Bring snacks, drinks, some games, cards, crayons or markers, stickers, etc -- we can decorated the big poster that was at the Banquet last night. Don't forget to bring chairs and towels. The Worker schedule is attached as a reminder. Heat Sheets are $7 this year. Champs T-Shirts are (I think) $10.

Try to be at our tent by at least 7:45am for the 8am warm-ups in Lane 2 . Good Luck Wahoos!

Cathy Welborn

Hey Wahoos,
We're heading into the home stretch! Our kids have improved so much this season thanks to Mike and Katie's expert coaching and the encouragement they've received from family, friends and teammates. Despite the fact that we are a small team in a rather large division, we really held our own at these events, both in the water and out. If meets were judged on a per capita point basis, the Wahoos would certainly be at the top. I am so proud of our team!

IMPORTANT REMINDER:
Kathleen Dunn has sent out an Evite for the Wahoo Banquet and is selling tickets during morning practice and at the meet this Monday. Please RSVP to the Evite by tomorrow so that we can give a headcount to our sponsor, Outback Steakhouse. If you did not get the Evite, please let me know. This is our only fundraiser for the season--so invite your family and friends! To those of you who will not be able to attend the Banquet and/or Champs, thank you for your support this season and we hope you will join us again next summer.

Attached is the Worker Schedule for our final home meet against Walton Park. There have been a couple of changes to this schedule, so please make sure you read this document. If you have any conflicts, inform me and the person in charge of your area of any changes ASAP.

See you on Monday!

RESULTS of DIVE MEET #2 TC and WRA vs CCV
I think the dive meet went very well. There is much improvement from all the divers. We were a little short on the Intermediate boys with Michael Dunn,Scott Hollahan and Sam Welborn out. However we picked several divers this week with Meagan Jones placing second. In addition Ezra Boswell placing first and Graham Godwin coming in second --the second sweep in the boys division. Also Abby Simonpietri,Jonathan Hood, Danny Welborn and Ben Ertel won first place in their respective age groups. I want to thank all the divers for their hard work in practice. It is definitely paying off.

Good Morning--

We are getting into high gear for the first Home Swim Meet of the season on Monday. As you can imagine, there is a dizzying number of details when planning an event for approximately 500 people! A real source of pride for the Wahoos is how efficiently we run a meet. I know we always remind the kids that every point counts, but it is true too for our volunteer army--every parent is crucial to the success of a meet.

More importantly, our team has been honored time and time again for its sportsmanship in both the water and as hosts and guests. So, let's have some fun, swim the best races possible, pray for good weather, and show all of our guests from Hermitage, Glen Allen and Walton Park what hospitality is all about. Oh yeah, and let's get home at a decent hour!

I have attached the Meet #3 Worker Schedule. (It's also available on the woodmont4fun.com site) If you will not be able to fulfill your job, you must try to find a replacement, and also let Tina Guthrow know immediately eyefordetail@comcast.net If your swimmer will not be able to participate, send Mike McKee a message ASAP mmckee11@vt.edu. His or her absence affects 3 other swimmers.

IMPORTANT--Parking will be limited. We are asking all of our parents to park in the lower lot to allow enough space for our guests.

Thanks for all you do to support our kids. See you Monday evening.
LET'S GO WAHOOS!

swim and dive news

Greetings Wahoos!

DIVE MEET #1 -- Woodmont and Three Chopt vs Church Run
We are coming up on our first dive meet tomorrow afternoon at 1pm. Divers need to arrive at Woodmont for warm-ups at 12:30. If any parent of a diver can volunteer to help Kathleen Dunn or Coach Bowen, it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Kathleen at dunnfeld@comcast.net if you have any questions about tomorrow's meet. Good Luck to Coach Bowen and to all of our Wahoo Divers!

SWIM MEET #2 --Woodmont vs. Walton Park
No question...our second swim meet against Walton Park was both exhilarating and exhausting. Hearty congrats to our coaches for their brilliant seeding strategy and to all of our swimmers who gave 100% in the water. We came SO CLOSE to winning against a team that is nearly double our size. This proves two things: We are definitely some mighty, Mighty Wahoos and...Every Single Point Counts! (the meet score report can be found on the News page at woodmont4fun.com)

Thanks to all of our parent volunteers for hanging in. It was a looooong, hot night with a few technical difficulties. But, as we were leaving, the Clerk of Course made a point of telling me how wonderful our kids are and thanked the team for our patience and sportsmanship. NICE! We will get a chance to show our hospitality to this team on July 19th.
A big THANK YOU to Gayle Park for the cool watermelon and baked goods at Tuesday's Fun Practice!

Coach Mike Message

I hope everyone is doing well. I'm not sure how the meet went from a parent's perspective, but I thought the kids did absolutely amazing last night. We knew that we wouldn't be leaving with a win, but that didn't stop the kids from swimming their hearts out. As a team, we dropped a huge amount of time. What's more impressive is that our kids swam nearly 250 individual races. All but 16 of those races were best times (not counting DQs, most of which would have been best times). That is really extraordinary! I will post the individual meet results on the bulletin board after practice today.

There are a few things that I need your help with or need you to be aware of:

1. Walton Park is our closest competition in the division. As of now, the only swimmers who will miss the meet are:

Ieuan Phillips
Quinn Schreck (can only do first 3 events)

Because we will have most of our team, we have a shot at pulling off this upset. Please let me know ASAP if your child cannot make this meet.

2. I will be out of town this weekend coaching a year-round meet. I leave Friday and will not be back until Sunday night. I will not have email access, but feel free to call me at 804-514-7578 if you need me.

3. Help me encourage your kids to keep up with practice. I have a season-long practice progression. What we do now, we will build upon as the season goes on.

4. DQs are a part of swimming. Even the best swimmers disqualify every now and then. However, it is very important that your child understands why they DQed. I try to make sure that everyone understands and learns from their mistake, but please encourage your kids to ask me why if they do not know.

5. It's never too late to join the swim team. If your swimmer has a sibling or friend who is interested, we'd love to have them!

As always, let me know if have any questions at all, and please, please, please let me know if your child cannot make the next meet. Thanks,

-Mike McKee

June 12 th - bad weather info

Hi everyone,

Crossing my fingers that we don't get any weather tomorrow, but just in case, here is an overview of what we need to do.

See you at Three Chopt!

Cathy Welborn

JRAC Weather Policy Guidelines

Be aware of the pool’s policy for thunder/lightning BEFORE the meet starts and inform your team: 15, 20 or 30 minute delay from the last occurrence. Do they want the deck clear? Do they have shelter for everyone or should you go to the car? If they go to their cars think about how you are going to be able to keep everyone informed.

Staff observes thunder/lightning –SWIMMING IMMEDIATELY STOPPED.

The “clock” then starts – dependent on each pool’s policy. If it lightning/thunders again the “clock” re-sets and each time thereafter that it occurs.

NOTE- Just because it thunders/lightnings you do NOT automatically go into an hour delay. It may only occur once and depending on the pool’s policy you can resume competition in 15,20 or 30 minutes.

The referee, JRAC reps from each team, head coaches from each team and pool management should then come together to discuss/monitor the situation.

Monitor the weather:

Weather channel on the internet or on-site tv

Call the local news station

Contact someone at home or send someone home to monitor the Weather Channel

If after an hour it doesn’t appear to be clearing up the referee, JRAC reps from each team, head coaches from each team and pool management will meet to decide whether to further delay or postpone.

If postponed it needs to be scheduled quickly….preferably for the next evening.

NOTE: If you have reached the hour you do NOT have to automatically postpone. If information shows that in 15-20 minutes it will pass thru you can continue to wait and then resume.

If the meet has not started and thunder/lightning occurs the meet can not be postponed until after 4:30

May 29, 2010

Greetings!

Firstly, I want you all to join me in thanking our President, Rick Adkins, for getting the pool open today. No one can imagine how many hours Rick has voluntarily given to our community pool over the past 3 or 4 years. Getting WRA up and running each season requires countless hours of planning and sweat labor. It doesn't just happen in a couple of weeks, either--he works year round to make it all happen. We all need to all pitch in this summer to make sure it stays as beautiful, clean and safe as it is today. Please offer to volunteer some time to help out--it would be greatly appreciated. And when you see Rick and Anne Adkins, let them know how much you appreciate what they do for the pool and for our team. The entrance looks fantastic!

We are getting ready to go to print with the Wahoo Swim and Dive Book. Check the attached Roster for the 2010 Wahoo Swim and Dive Team. If you see any errors, please send me a note with the change(s) ASAP. If your kid is diving, but you don't see a bold/ital beside his/her name, let me know. If you prefer a different phone number, or would like to add your spouse's name and/or email, send it to me. Most importantly, you must check the birthdate and spelling of your swimmer and/or diver's name because this is what goes to the League. Also, if you happen to see a name or email that is missing from the list, please let me know. Many people sent their registrations to the PO Box and I am still missing a few including the Dennehy's. If anyone knows their phone number, please let me know.

We will be sending out the Worker's Schedule next week. Please DO NOT make any more changes in SignUp Genius.

MANDATORY CLINICS
If you signed up for any of the following positions, this is the last chance to get certified. It is important that you understand that we will not be able to run our meets if you do not attend this clinic or one held previously. If you would like to attend any of these clinics, but are not scheduled for one of these positions--COME ANYWAY! No doubt we can use the backup.

If anyone can come a bit early to help me set up chairs for this clinic, please let me know. It will be crowded as it is the last chance to get certified for all teams.

Thank you and see you on Wednesday at the clinic!

May 28, 2010

Greetings,

I hope everyone's been well lately. I am very impressed with how the kids are practicing so far. Attendance has been great for all age groups, and everyone is picking up their skills very quickly. I can easily say that the team has never looked better after just two weeks of practice since I've been here. If this enthusiasm continues, your kids are going to have a great year!

There are three announcements that I would like to make:

1. There will be no practice on Monday, May 31 because of Memorial Day.

2. I would like for many of our 11-12 year-olds to practice at 5:15 until school is out. We have about 30 kids showing up to the 3:45 practice and only about 10 who show up for the 5:15. This switch would be especially beneficial for our 11 and-olders who just joined the team because the coaches would be able to give them more attention. Also, next week we will only have 3 lanes to practice in. The 5:15 practice group is not meant to be just a Midget practice. It is also for the older swimmers who cannot make it to the 3:45 practice in time. Until school is out, these groups swim roughly the same work-out.

3. If you know in advance that you will miss a swim meet, please let me know in writing. You are welcome to email me, or hand me something at practice. Knowing in advance will save me a lot of time, and more importantly, allow me to put Woodmont and your kids in the best position to succeed.

For those I don't see at practice today, I hope you have a great weekend! As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

-Mike McKee

Hello Wahoo Divers,
Just a reminder that dive practice begins tomorrow at 5pm. We are thrilled to welcome our Head Dive Coach Mark Bowen back to the Woodmont family. Mr. Bowen grew up in this neighborhood and remembers when the pool was built. Even better...he was a Wahoo swimmer and diver for more than 10 years!

Dive practice is from 5-7pm for all ages. Check the website for details. If you have not signed up and would like to, the cost is $90 or $110 for swim and dive. Send your check made out to WRA to:
Cathy Welborn
10316 Ashburn Road
Richmond, VA 23235

If you have questions, please contact our Dive Coordinator, Kathleen Dunn, at dunnfeld@comcast.net

Thanks and see you soon,

It's POOL TIME! - 5/10/10 email

Greetings Wahoos!
The pool is filled and ready for our first team practice next Monday with coaches Mike and Katie. So far, we are 90 swimmers strong! I am hoping that we can reach at least 100 swimmers, so tell your friends and neighbors. Reminders:

SWIMSUITS are new this year. Our apparel coordinator, Margaret Hood, will be at practice next Monday to take orders or to answer questions. If you would like to go ahead and get your suits now, they can be purchased at: Disco Sports, 1400 Starling Drive, Richmond, Virginia 23229, 804 285- 4242
Ask for the Woodmont Wahoo swimsuit

SWIM PRACTICES begin on May 17th. Please check the practice schedule at www.woodmont4fun.com to see what time your child will need to be there.

SUPER IMPORTANT! It is mandatory that you attend one clinic if you have signed up for Strokes and Turns, Clerk of Course, Head Table, and/or Head Timer. JRAC will not allow us to run a meet without having attended a clinic. There are 4 dates left--Please check the JRAC website www.jracsummerswim.org for the specific clinics and times. NOTE: not every clinic is offered at every session.

1. Tomorrow Night, Tuesday, May 11 -- Burkwood
2. Sunday, May 16 -- Westwood
3. Wed, May 26 -- Avalon
4. Wed, June 2 -- Woodmont
Thanks to all that have signed up for volunteer positions on SignUp Genius. If you haven't, please do so ASAP! Make certain that you and your spouse sign up for the appropriate spots, even if you filled it out on your registration form. Volunteers are especially needed in Hospitality and Strokes and Turns officials. Signing up is important--we cannot run a meet without all of these key spots filled. It's easy and you will get reminders too! Click here to sign up: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/wahoo/102878
Let me know if you have any questions. See you soon!
